listen up Gout Sufferers
by: Anonymous

ive lost a toe ,tendons cut, crossed over, so i finally researched over and over, and all info changes, etc....but this i positivly know...concentrated tart cherry juice 2tblsp in 8 oz water, 2x a day for swelling and that brings down the pain associated. lemon in water a great drink, flushes the gout crystals, and plain water. celery good, if u like celery.the rest of our diet , in moderstion. i sa no need to avoid, but really in modestion.( like 3 teriakis on a stic 1x a month ) :) i do take colcrys, occassionally , its good, but refuse all other meds new and old, cause i know what i mentiond naturally here , is beneficial. just water and apples, no.

What I eat during a gout attack
by: MIKE E

Here is my eating during a gout attack and for a week or two after symptoms resolve.

**A lot of water, including at least two large glasses per day with fresh lemon juice squeezed from a lemon half.

Bananas
Broccoli
Almonds (unsalted)
Egg whites from hard boiled eggs
Water
Green tea with honey and lemon
Organic Cherry juice (this is very pricey IMO)
Blueberries
Strawberries
Carrots
Watermelon
Popcorn (hot air popped with no salt, butter, etc)
Vegetable rolls (sushi eaters know these)

Unfortunately this is not a long list, but like anyone with this affliction the objective is to get the swelling down and eliminate the pain.

I take Alleve to help reduce inflammation. I also try to keep my foot elevated above my heart to keep the swelling and throbbing down as much as possible - including while I sleep.

I recently had my first true attack in about a year. I think a combination of eating a lot of salted products, a lot of trout, drinking beer and not drinking enough water all contributed. Fortunately if I watch my diet (primarily no meat during the week) I can still drink beer and not have attacks. I think it is critical to drink a lot of water and avoid heavily-salted products.

Surprisingly enough in the past jogging has triggered a minor attack (lasting only 1 or 2 days and not progressing to a full-blown event).

I made an appointment with my doctor. I am going to finally give in (after about 6 or 7 years of dealing with this) and get something from my doctor to kill the attack once I feel it coming on. In the past 2 doctors wanted me to permanently take medication and I declined. I just want something to kill or stall the full-blown event once I feel/see the warning signs.

I hope this helps many, but even if it only helps one person I will be happy. Believe me when I say this - I feel your pain!!!!!

Basically, fresh fruits and vegetables every meal. Check the site here for the foods. Breads that have yeast should be eaten less and beer should be avoided--it has yeast. Yeast is bad. If you drink the apple cider vinegar concoction after two meals a day that will help counteract the acid build-up...it has worked for me. You have to have protein in your diet. I can eat eggs. FOr some people eggs give them gout. Milk is suppose to be good. For me, I think milk helps to combat gout. I do smoothies--1/2 cup of fruit, a cup of nonfat milk, and 4 ice cubes. You do need to see a dietitian to get yourself on a proper diet. google to find one near you. It was $75 for the hour and she gave me the diet and counselled me. It's well worth it.

You can eat protein, just limit it, the dietitian will let you know how much. Limit beef. Limit pork. Shellfish is bad--I haven't had any since my first gout attack. I have had beef and pork but rarely since January--my first attack. I eat turkey and chicken most times.

With the ACV you can help yourself to stay gout free. That's your best bet (from my experience for me and from advice from here). Limit sugar (turns to acid), limit or eliminate fried foods (turns rancid/acid).

2 liters of water/day, fresh fruits and vegetables.

I bought a juicer (jack lalane $99) and juice a handfull of baby carrots, 1 inch of fresh ginger, and one apple...it makes 1 cup of juice....I use combo fruit/vegies sometimes when I don't want to eat the vegies. The fresh vegies (noncooked) have more vit/minerals than cooked so I feel I'm getting better nutrition too. Tastes yummy also. You can buy everything at amazon.com too if u need to.

Anyway, that's some of what I do (in addition to the other post I posted)....Take care. P.S. high blood pressure doesn't cause gout--the water pill in high blood pressure meds cause it. i'm on them and will address that with my doc when I get $ to see him...I feel I need the water pill, though because if I don't take my high bld pressure med I bloat up, esp in the lower legs. Weight is a major factor---i have to lose more and then maybe will be off high bld pressure meds. Take care. Terri

Gout Aware reply to Tom
by: Peter from Gout Aware

Hi Tom,
I recommend you get a 2nd opinion from a different doctor and see a dietician to sort out correct foods.

You MUST and I stress MUST make your doctor aware of what remedies you are thinking of taking. I see you are going to use tumeric? Before you start anything get a doctors approval as these herbal remedies can or may affect the other medications you are on? Terri makes some great comments from her experiences also.
We are all different and are affected by diets and medications differently. Please research and make a list of questions to ask your doctor and nutritionist and or dietician and see what you can take that does not interfere with any medications. You could make things far worse by not taking this advice.

good luck and let us all know of the outcomes and discoveries you make.

regards
Peter

Tom B. Welcome...Sorry about your gout!
by: Terri

This is THE BEST WEBSITE ON GOUT OUT THERE! Peter lists the foods you should & should not eat. The apple cider vineger concoction is great. There is also a site I found called: www.goutpal.com, which is also a good site. He gives detailed charts of alkaline/acidic levels of all foods, which is important in choosing foods for meal combinations. Amazon.com has a book on alkaline/acidity contents of food. Be careful with the cherry juice, as one man with gout said he had drank too much & was in a life-threatening situation due to the high content of potassium in the cherry juice. I haven't tried cherry juice myself, but I may because I was told bing cherries are now out of season. I was put on: Indomethacin (anti=inflammatory), Tramadol (pain med), & a 6 day steroid pack during my first attack in Jan 2011. I could barely walk. I'm a massage therapist & I have to be able to walk. I was out of work for a week & I was fearful of losing my job. Luckily I didn't & I'm back to making my income. I nearly had a gout recurrence last week, I had tuna (3 oz) three lunches in a row, So, I stopped eating tuna. Tofu is a protein alternative for gout sufferers. If you have kidney stones of oxylase content, however, Tofu is not recommended due to high oxylase content. (I have the oxylase kidney stones....I have a VERY SMALL LIST OF FOODS THAT I CAN EAT.) Green/red cabbage, pineapple, apples, bing cherries, cucs, green onion, romaine lettuce, flour & corn tortillas, raisin bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, eggs, corn flakes (organic only corn/salt), organic skim milk, cottage cheese, low fat cheese, yogurt; chicken, ground turkey, turkey sausage, butter, olive oil, apple cider vinegar & cocktail. I saw a reg dietitian & was placed on 1600 cal diet & to exercise 1 hr/day & to lose 60-80 lbs. I can't drink coffee now, as it makes me have high bld pressure & feel sick. I drink green tea & honey instead. WWW.gout-aware.com recommends to drink at least 2 ltrs/day of water. I drink two 20 oz water bottles before noon & 2 after--EVERY DAY without fail. There are cookbooks on amazon.com from 1 author on cooking for gout. I have not yet purchased them. Gout-aware has all the food information you need. Salmon & mushrooms were questionable--some websites say they are ok & some say don't eat them. That is where the alkaline/acidity charts help. It is important to know where the salmon came from-the acidity level is different. I've eaten salmon & I think it's ok for me. I created a facebook page: goutsufferers unite if you would like to join it. I need to buy litmus paper to test urine but haven't yet. The only place I see where you can buy it is at amazon.com. In www.goutpal.com he mentions a kit to measure your blood....I'm not sure I want to do that..but the kit is orderable there. Terri
